Wouldn't It Be AWESOME?
I often used this phrase when I was younger for intangible things that I thought were 'awesome'. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a new sports car, be rich, ace every exam, or even date one of the New Kids on the Block? But we all know that the 'awesome' does not just happen without discipline and work to back it up. If you want something bad enough you have to engage in genuine discipline and it requires that you develop the ability to take action. So what is your 'awesome'? Is it financial security, a fulfilling relationship, or that dream job with the corner office?
No matter how big or small your dream, it all starts with making a determined decision, taking action, and sticking with it.
1. We have been discouraged from dreaming by others.
We have to be the driver of our own dreams (aka ‘awesome’); we cannot entrust them to anyone else. People who aren’t following their own dreams resent us for pursuing ours. Such people feel inadequate when we succeed, so they try to drag us down. You all know this when you try to explain a UPW event to someone who has never attended. What about trying to explain having a Tony Robbins Results Coach?? Move on...You are way to busy making your dreams happen!!
2. We fall into the habit of settling for average.
Average is easy for a reason. Being exceptional demands extra effort, sustained inspiration and uncommon discipline. Most of us don’t pay the price to overcome the opposition to our dreams. We may start out inspired, but through time we fatigue. Although never intending to abandon our dreams, we begin to make concessions here and there.
3. We are hindered by past disappointments and hurts.
The past does not equal the future! Many of us live with the memory of failure embedded in our mind. Perhaps a business we started went broke, or we were fired from an important job. Disappointment is the gap that exists between expectation and reality, and all of us have encountered that gap. The great Michael Jordan once said “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. Very cool!!
4. We are missing the imagination and confidence to dream.
Many of us play small because we do not allow ourselves to dream. We major in minor things. We live in the day to day and never dare to go beyond. Imagination gives us the confidence to push beyond average.
5. It’s okay to be multi-passionate.
Kat Loterzo wrote a whole book about this! Visualizing your future pursuing multiple dreams is awesome! Pursue the 1, 2, or 3 dreams that you can really see yourself accomplishing 3 years from now!
Don't wait! And YES the time is now to make dreams happen for you! When you wake up in the morning and you say, "Today things are going to change, I’m going to change. Things are going to start happening.” It is then that you know you are 'awesome'! -M
